Two pieces of information revealed by the blue-and-white porcelain of the Tang Dynasty (above)

In early November 2008, a symposium on the appreciation of blue and white porcelain in 2008, jointly held by the Chinese Ancient Ceramics Society, the Yangzhou Museum and the Yangzhou Buddhist Culture Museum, was held in Yangzhou, a famous historical and cultural city with the starting point of the Silk Road.In this conference, the archeology institute of Yangzhou City and the archeology institute of Henan Province respectively made a detailed introduction and explanation to the blue-and-white porcelain pieces unearthed in Yangzhou, Huangye cellar of Gongxian County, Henan Province, and Baihe kiln site.Zhang Zhigang, engineer of Shanghai Silicate Research Institute of Chinese Academy of Sciences, made a special speech from the angle of science and technology examination.Lu Huaming, a researcher at Shanghai Museum and executive director of the Chinese Ancient Ceramics Society, also made a speech on the study of Tang Qinghua and discussed the existence of Tang blue-and-white porcelain with a great deal of data.

The meeting, experts on China’s blue-and-white porcelain originated in the Tang Dynasty, Henan Gongxian kiln mouth once again reached a consensus, the existence of the Tang Qinghua has become an indisputable fact. The appearance of blue-and-white porcelain in Tang Dynasty rewrote the history of Chinese blue-and-white porcelain and pushed it forward for more than 400 years. At the same time, experts warned that since the 1970s in Yangzhou Tangcheng site excavated the first piece of blue-and-white porcelain, until now has not attracted too many archeological and literary experts attention and attention. In order to further uncover the mystery of the Qing-hua of the Tang Dynasty and promote the research and collection of the blue-and-white porcelain of the Tang Dynasty by the archaeology and literature circles, the author now makes public the two pieces of the Qing-hua porcelain collected by himself in the mid-1990s in order to achieve the date of the laying of the stone.

Tang Qing Hua Zhi pot (notes).I collect this Tang Qing Hua holding pot (above), 9.5 cm high, 6.5 cm diameter,6 cm bottom diameter, its tool type belongs to the early Tang Dynasty in the northern kiln mouth popular small holding pot (note) shape, abutment, short neck, round abdomen, cake foot, one side flow, one side with a handle. The purpose of such small-sized pots is difficult to determine because of the different theories of experts. The author thinks this kind of small-sized holding pot because of its limited capacity, and between the handle of the pot and the body of the pot only allow one finger, called the water or wine vessel are not proper.Because in the early Tang Dynasty, people mostly used pottery inkstone or porcelain inkstone to study ink, this kind of ceramic inkstone table water absorption is stronger, use need to add water constantly, can guarantee inkstone pool not dry not dry.And this form is not small, easy to carry and use the small holding pot, just to meet the needs of literati desk. Therefore this pot is called water injection or ink drop seems to be more appropriate.

Generally speaking, in the Tang Dynasty, Gongxian kiln mouth porcelain’s fetal quality is thick and loose, in order to make up for the defect of fetal quality, increase the glaze finish, smart Gongxian kiln workers have absorbed other northern kiln on the surface of the application of make-up soil advanced experience, Thus makes the porcelain glaze and the embryo place appear more pure and beautiful.

I collected this hold pot on the surface of the tire is covered with white make-up earth, only in the bottom foot of the chamfer there is a loop of the tire. The fetal quality is relatively loose, the embryo is beige and contains black and brown impurities.Due to the loose quality of the fetus, combined with low firing temperature (sub-high temperature), the body of the pot is not fully porcelain, tapping with the hand, the sound slightly dull.Hold the pot to apply semi-glaze, external glaze to the lower abdomen, glaze transparent and creamy yellow, the inner neck below no glaze.Under the magnifying glass observation, the glaze of the pot has the weight different earth erosion mark and the cloth fine-grained grain, the grain inside has the light yellow upper Qin.The appearance of flowing glaze is due to the high calcium permeable glaze used in Gongxian kiln in Tang Dynasty. The glaze surface of porcelain is thin and smooth because of the large fluidity at high temperature. And often at the bottom of the glaze forms a wax tear-like flow of glaze marks. The precious thing about this jug is that it was a rare blue-and-white porcelain made in the mid-Tang Dynasty in Gongxian Kiln, Henan Province. At the same time, the kiln workers in Gongxian kiln in Tang Dynasty burned a lot of white porcelain and three colors of Tang Dynasty, and painted directly on the white porcelain tire with the make-up clay, then covered with a layer of white transparent glaze and fired into the kiln.

The author of this collection of blue-and-white pot, blue-and-white decoration for the dot, strip-like, with the obvious since the six-year-old colored painting of the following wind.Blue and white hair blue black, no black spots, blue material completely melt in between the embryo glaze, and there is obvious halo.Touch the glaze with your hand. The glaze with blue-and-white patterns is slightly convex.According to the scientific examination of Tang blue-and-white porcelain piece unearthed in Yangzhou by Zhang Zhigang, engineer of Shanghai Silicate Research Institute, Tang blue-and-white cobalt material belongs to low iron, low manganese and contains trace elements of copper and sulfur. The source should be sulfur copper drilling in the Tang Dynasty.Although the blue-and-white material collected by the author has not been tested (destructive), its embryo, glaze and hair color of the blue-and-white are almost identical to the Tang blue-and-white porcelain pieces unearthed in Yangzhou and similar to the Tang blue-and-white porcelain pieces unearthed at the Baihe kiln site in Gongxian County, Henan Province. Therefore, this blue-and-white jug should be a rare and perfect masterpiece of the Tang Dynasty blue-and-white porcelain.Of course, this very rare Tang Qinghua pot, the domestic only Yangzhou Museum has a piece of remains, Henan Province, although there are four or five public and private possession, but most of the ceramic dot blue ware, can not be called a complete sense of Tang Qinghua. The complete Tang Qinghua pot, similar to my collection, is a Tang Qinghua note (below) hidden at the Stockholm Oriental Museum in Sweden. It is not widely seen, but from the point of view of its shape and degree of glaze application, the Qinghua pot, hidden overseas, should be something of an early Tang Dynasty. The author’s collection of Tang Qinghua master pot collection appears to be more precious.

What needs to be explained is, according to the data that the author has mastered, the Tang Dynasty blue-and-white porcelain ware (porcelain pieces) are unearthed at present, and the six pieces collected abroad are also. Therefore, as long as the connoisseurs have mastered the basic characteristics of Gaogu porcelain, combined with the embryo glaze, modelling, production process and the hair color and decorative features of the Qing-hua Tang Dynasty, the identification of the Qing-hua Tang is not difficult.
